Does anyone enjoy cleaning guns?

I have a friend that has a good number of guns. Exactly how many I'm not really sure. Anyway he doesn't have a whole lot of time for periodic cleanings. Told me it's been a while since he cleaned ANY. He's been giving me a couple now and then to "clean" (Ha Ha).

I really enjoy breaking them down and giving them a good once over. I can only afford a few (working on expanding all the time), but it's nice being able to handle the different makes and models.

So far he's come off of:
British Enfield #1 MKIII
Marlin 9mm semi auto rifle
Savage 22 mag bolt
Marlin 22 mag bolt
German Mauser
Savage 308 bolt
M1 Garrand (beauty)
AR 15
Savage 22LR semi-auto

Lovin life......

You can not beat the smell of Hoppe's #9 and oil.

The smell of hoppes reminds me of my childhood...cleaning guns with my dad. So yes, I enjoy cracking open the hoppes and I enjoy cleaning the guns...except for the barrels of mosin-nagants and their DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY powder...I hate having to run 30 patches down a barrel before they come out clean...

Used to clean mine religiously after every trip... except the last time.

Recently found that the bolt on my mini 14 is locked up.

Coincidence? I'm thinking probably not.

BTW I agree totally about the Hoppe's...:ok:

I used to love it, now it's a bore/chore.

I do like the first cleaning/detail strip of a new platform, figuring out how everything fits/works together.

I generally only clean the ones that don't come out a lot. I shoot a lot, so I don't bother cleaning if the stick is going to get shot again in a few days.

I love the smell of Hoppes or Shooter's Choice but I hate cleaning guns. Some like my CZ 52 have to be cleaned immediately due to corrosive ammo...others I let slide till they really need it.

I LOVE cleaning em.

I used to run a paintball shop and it wasnt unusualy for me to waste a good 8 or 9 hour day cleaning them. Put real guns in front of me and you can kiss the whole day good bye. I do it until I literaly can not use my fingers anymore.

Get some Ballistol, just spray it down and you're done.

I love taking a gun that needs a deep cleaning and tearing it down and shining it up. Gotta say though, when I'm shooting a lot, it gets old. But I do it.

I love doing it, but I still have that new gun owner glow.

I neither love it nor hate it, but I do recognize the value of getting to know the weapon.

A glass of bourbon after shooting with friends on a brisk fall day.
The aromas of Hoppes along with a fire in the fireplace and something good cooking in the kitchen.

Swapping stories, lies and good natured stonecracking.

Life is good.

An ordinate amount of running a rod down the bore will kill accuracy.

Revolvers are okay. Hate M-16s, 1911 .45s, etc. with so many parts to have to break down, clean and possibly lose.

I love a clean gun, I hate cleaning them though it's a chore.

I understand the need for a clean weapon though, and the need to clean it before storing. My accuracy improves remarkably with a clean barrel and that tells me all I need to know.

Depends on the rod, and a lot of other factors, not to mention the fact that there are plenty of options that don't require a rod. That said, I still don't clean 'em.:bear_tongue:

It is my belief that the over use of a wire bore brush will help rune the bore on a barrel faster than you may think!

Uncoated steel cleaning rods are also not a good thing.
Crap that can get embedded on the rod can scratch the bore.

Coated rods are better but they need to be kept clean also.

Just saying IMO

I clean mines out really good only using patches and a cleaner and sometimes copper remover, I never used brushes.

If you wear out your steel bore with a copper brush faster than an oversized copper bullet moving at a few thousand feet per second, you need to shoot a LOT more.:ok:
